In 1602, the Dutch East India Company issued shares of stock, giving rise to the prototype of the modern securities market. Nearly 400 years have passed since then. Throughout that time, humanity has refined the technologies to record value, secure trust, and trade across the world.

Stocks, bonds, real estate, gold, and a wide range of rights— We are entering an era in which real-world assets (RWA) are represented, managed, and circulated on the blockchain.

Until now, Web3 has at times been spoken of in terms of "speculation." But on the front lines of the world, the phase has already shifted.

Google, IBM, Deutsche Telekom, Nomura, Shinhan Bank, Accenture— Hedera is an institutional-grade Layer 1 network governed by leading global companies and organizations that participate as members of the Hedera Council. Nomura, moreover, takes part as one of its validators.

In this event, Nomura Securities will share the front lines of securities and tokenization in Japan, while Hedera's global team will deliver the latest developments from around the world. As of June 2026, Hedera ranks 24th worldwide by market capitalization on CoinMarketCap, drawing attention as an institutional-grade Layer 1 network whose validators include some of the world's leading global enterprises.

This time, we welcome Hedera's global teams from APAC and the United States to Japan to share, directly from the front lines:

• Institutional onboarding in the security-token and digital-asset space

With Nomura already participating as a validator on Hedera, Nomura Securities will deepen the discussion around the trends in securities and tokenization in Japan, as well as the global expansion of institutional investors.

The Origins of Hedera

Hedera was conceived by two individuals: a researcher specializing in computer science, and a business expert with many years of executive experience in the technology industry. The patent for the Hashgraph consensus algorithm was obtained in 2015, and the Hashgraph white paper was published in 2016. In 2018, Hedera was officially launched in Dallas, Texas, USA, and its mainnet went live that same year. Since then, as an enterprise-grade, public permissioned network, its adoption has spread to institutional investors and enterprises around the world.

Hedera's Ecosystem and Hashgraph

Hedera (HBAR) is a public permissioned network built on Hashgraph consensus technology, positioned as the "foundational layer of trust in the digital economy" for regulated industries. Its use cases span a broad range of domains—from the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA), stablecoin-based settlement, and DeFi (decentralized finance) to supply chain management and AI infrastructure.

Unlike typical public networks operated by anonymous validators, Hedera is governed by the Hedera Council, comprising up to 31 of the world's leading organizations, including Google, IBM, Deutsche Telekom, Nomura, Shinhan Bank, and Accenture. The network itself is developed by Hashgraph, and its underlying source code is independently maintained and managed as "Project Hiero" under the Linux Foundation.

With transaction finality in under three seconds, fixed fees starting from USD 0.0001, EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatibility, and compliance with U.S. Treasury OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) regulations, Hedera stands as a compelling foundational choice for banks, institutional investors, and enterprises seriously adopting tokenization.

Within Nomura Securities' finance division, she has been responsible for tax, treasury, and CFO planning operations, among others. In April 2023, she joined the Digital Asset Strategy Department, where she leads the operational management of Laser Digital—an overseas digital-asset subsidiary—as well as new business development leveraging crypto assets and stablecoins. She serves as Web3 Group Leader.

John Kikko

Hashgraph (the company operating Hedera) Senior Director, Investments

Senior Director of Investments at Hashgraph, the company supporting Hedera. Over the past four years, he has led strategic partnerships with banks, asset managers, and securities firms, focusing on the adoption of distributed-ledger infrastructure for institutional investors, regulation-compliant asset tokenization, stablecoin-based settlement, and the role of public networks underpinning financial systems in the AI era. Previously, he spent more than 15 years in global equity sales and trading at Nomura Securities, Morgan Stanley, and Bank of America, building his career across New York, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. He is a rare figure who combines deep expertise in traditional finance with hands-on leadership in the digital-asset space.

As Chief Partnership Officer at Hashgraph, he oversees the Hedera network's global strategic partnerships and ecosystem growth. With over 20 years of experience spanning enterprise technology, digital assets, AI, and blockchain, he has served on the boards of IBM, Hedera, and multiple industry bodies and open-source initiatives. Known for helping turn cutting-edge technology into scalable business outcomes, he brings deep expertise in governance, compliance, operational strategy, and ecosystem building.

At Hashgraph, he leads Hedera's growth strategy across Asia, helping shape the future of the region's digital economy.
